FESD Digital Citizenship Week - 9/23 - 9/27 💻 📱

Posted Date: 9/26/24 (7:05 PM)

It's Digital Citizenship Week at FESD!
Although Digital Citizenship Week is usually recognized the third week of October around the world, at FESD, we decided to start our year with the topic as it fits in perfectly with our social-emotional curriculum, Character Strong, and the lessons we are already teaching about kindness, empathy, respect, courage, gratitude, and more.

What is digital citizenship? Here is a video viewed in several classrooms this week: What is Digital Citizenship? Video.

Classes at Walker, Ambrosini, Toddy Thomas, and FMS have been participating in lessons and activities focusing on being good digital citizens and using technology for good (#USeTech4Good)!
Learn more about the curriculum here: Common Sense Media Digital Citizenship.

Some sample digital citizenship lessons and themes include:

  • Online Safety: Protecting Private Information/Using Strong Passwords
  • Digital Footprints: Making strong choices About What to Post
  • Be Kind Online: How to Recognize Cyberbullying and Bullying and Stop It
  • Real or Fake: How to Find Credible and Trustworthy Information Sources
  • Media Balance: Knowing When to Take A Break From the Screen
  • The Power of Words: Strengthening Online Communication

  • While some students at Walker learned about the Common Sense Media character "Heart" and the importance of being kind, some students at Ambrosini learned about "Arms" and how to balance their time on electronics and media.

Some Toddy students learned about digital citizenship by playing the game "Interland: Be Internet Awesome." Check out this Google Digital Citizenship curriculum here: https://beinternetawesome.withgoogle.com/en_us/interland!

Fortuna Middle School held dress-up days every day this week (see graphic below). On Wednesday, students dressed in sports team gear and participated in a school-wide lesson of "Team Up and Be Kind. " They learned about bullying and cyberbullying, how to recognize it, and how to stop it. If you would like to learn more about how you can tackle these topics at home, there are many resources for parents and guardians at https://www.commonsense.org/education/family-resources. CommonSense Media also has information about how much screen time is appropriate for each age. There are also tech agreements for families that can be found here:
