Fortuna Elementary School District
Superintendent’s Report
April 2026
Curriculum and Instruction:
Our students and teachers continue to prepare for the upcoming CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) testing, which is scheduled to begin at the end of April and continue through May. Students in grades 3rd through 8th will participate in the ELA and math summative assessments, and students in grades 5th and 8th will take the science assessment. Teachers are supporting students through targeted review and goal-setting to ensure they are prepared to demonstrate their learning.
Our summer ELOP (Expanded Learning Opportunities Program) is scheduled for July 6th through July 31st and will be held at Walker Elementary School, now that construction at the site is complete. The program will serve TK-6th grade students and will continue to provide a full day of enrichment, academics, meals, and transportation. Registration information will be shared with families via ParentSquare soon.
Budget:
We are beginning to work on the LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) update and budget development for the 2026-27 school year. Once the May Revision is released by Governor Newsom, we will have more clarity on California’s budget for the coming year. Our Budget Managers, Jennifer Goodner and Courtney Sousa, and I will attend the School Services of California May Revise Workshop on May 21st to support our planning and development process.
Construction and Maintenance:
Pierson Co. has substantially completed the office remodel at Toddy Thomas, with only a couple of remaining furniture items to be finalized this summer, and officially turned over the space to the District at the beginning of April. During spring break, staff transitioned from the temporary office in the library into the new office space. The new office will open to students, staff, and families on Monday, April 13th, along with the reopening of the front entrance. For safety and security, the double doors to the foyer will remain locked during school hours, and all visitors will be required to check in through the office before accessing the campus. Bus drop-off and pick-up will now take place in front of the office, while private car pick-up will continue on Thelma, as this has worked well to alleviate excess traffic on Wood Street. Thank you to our staff, students, and families for their patience throughout this process - the final product was well worth the wait!
An additional phase of work related to the Path of Travel (POT) requirements is scheduled to be completed this summer. Timing this work during the summer months will help minimize further disruption to the campus while school is in session. This project represents the final component of the overall remodel, and once completed, the entire project will be finalized.
Enrollment for 2026-27:
Enrollment for the 2026-27 school year is now open to new TK-8th-grade students. Families may complete the registration process online at the District website, fortunaesd.com, where enrollment links and additional information are available. Transitional Kindergarten (TK) eligibility applies to children who turn four years old on or before September 1, 2026. Families are encouraged to view the informational video on the District website to learn more about the TK and kindergarten programs at Ambrosini and Walker Schools. Families with children currently enrolled in the District do not need to re-register, as students will be automatically enrolled in the next grade level for the 2026-27 school year. We look forward to welcoming new students and families to our District!
